BoulderJS is a monthly meetup held on the third Wednesday of every month. We host talks about all things JavaScript from using Node to program IoT to best programming practices with the newest technologies. We are open to all skill levels and love fostering connections to help people learn and improve while expanding their network of individuals who geek out about JS and code. Come join us for our May meetup where we'll have two 30 minute talks about app architectures and functional programming. More details on each talk below. Hope to see you there!

Serverless Architecturesby David Ortiz Frau
David will speak from experience in building large and unruly apps with a monolithic architecture and simple single page apps with Firebase. He will compare architectures that lie at both ends of the complexity scale to uncover the benefits and drawbacks of each. There is a lot cover in just 30min and David will start with the high-level architecture concepts and show only the most extreme cases in action.

This talk will give you an easy to understand set of criteria to evaluate the stack that will be the best fit for your next app.

Maps, Monads, and Pure Functions:
Functional Programming for Beginners* by Madison Kerndt
We’ve all met that one dev who’s absolutely obsessed with “pure functions” and throws around the word “lambda” like anyone knows what the heck he’s talking about.

If you don’t have a degree in applied mathematics, FP is intimidating. No, terrifying. But here’s the thing — once you get past the fancy words, it’s really quite simple. And, after you recover from your mind being blown, you’ll find yourself with an entirely new set of technical tools.

This talk is advanced programming for beginners. We’ll make FP approachable and walk you through how to build a functional program in JavaScript.
* This talk will also be given at a workshop at DinosaurJS in June.
